When you first meet the person you are interviewing with, you want to help them get to know like and trust you by building some type of rapport with them. Understand that to start with it is at best an awkward situation. Basically you are two strangers meeting for the first time.
This is similar to going to a party where you do not know anyone.
With rapport building you are trying to find some way that you can realistically “connect” with the person you are sitting opposite.
Now hopefully in your research prior to the interview you have uncovered some insight into the person’s background, where you can ask some questions that will help build some type of rapport with the person you are interviewing with.
When create and ask these questions, make sure they are geared toward making the person feel comfortable and at ease.
Question: How do you envision your organization in the next year, three years and five years?
This will give you a great picture of their vision and how realistic their plans are. Understand to a certain degree your position would be part of the team accountable for achieving the goals laid out in their answer.
Question: What type of problems do you currently have in your department that you are looking to solve in the next year, three years and five years?
Question: What type of problems do you currently have in your organizations that you are looking to solve in the next year, three years and five years?
Question: What are the 3 most important traits or characteristics needed to succeed in this organization?
Question: What do you consider to be the strengths and weaknesses of this organization that I should be aware of?
Again make sure that you phrase the question in a way that will not offend them or make them feel like you have put them on the spot.
Next week I will share with you the second type of interview questions to ask the employer. The second type I will discuss with you are the questions where you gather background information regarding the company.
Good luck with your interviews this week.
I believe in you!
Good luck,
Warmly,
Eleanor
